As any smart consumer will tell you: the MORE competition there is for your hard earned dollar the better the prices will be! The same holds true for motherboard, netbook, laptop and all other OEM manufactures of computer equipment. The more options they have to chose from for controller chips the cheaper they can get them, which in turn means the cheaper WE can get the finished products!
This is why the recent announcement by the USB-IF is such great news as they just announced a second certified USB 3.0 controller chip! Up until now if you wanted a USB 3.0 enabled motherboard, USB 3.0 adapter card, or anything else for that matter you were buying what was essentially a NEC controller based solution! Well, look out NEC as there is a new player in town and his name is FL1000 by Fresco Logic. Hopefully, this is just the first drops in what will hopefully end up being a MONSOON of host controller options OEM's can chose from! While there is no information available on the xHCI 1.0-compliant FL1000s performance vs. that of the NEC or even the cost of the controller chip, the future certainly looks a bit more brighter for consumers today than it day yesterday!
