The Korean giant has made an Samsung Orion Dual Core processor, 1 GHz frequence intended to equip devices such as smartphones and tablet. The new processor is based on ARM architecture.
Already since the end of this year, but only for some selected partner company, Samsung will provide Orion, a powerful new processor that will enrich the landscape of solutions dedicated to low-power devices such as smartphones, tablet and netbook. Volume production, however, is scheduled for early 2011. Orion, which more properly should be called SoC (System on Chip), operates at a frequency of 1 GHz and is built using 45 nanometer process production.
This is a chip enriched with 1 MB cache second level, 32 KB of data cache and the same instruction cache. The real novelty is introduced by the graphics core is completely redesigned and capable of ensuring performance of all relief. According to preliminary estimates, it should be up to five times more performance than previous solutions offered by the manufacturer. Orion is a dedicated SoC, as expected, low-power systems, but is designed to ensure a satisfying experience multimedia.
In this regard, as stated by Samsung itself, the new processor supports FullHD video streams (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) at a rate of 30 frames per second, enabling smooth playback, natural and without uncertainty. However the real challenge of Samsung Orion is not only to reproduce but also to record video in 1080p resolution. The SoC is based on ARM Cortex A9 architecture and supports HDMI 1.3a and storage media such as SSD, NAND Flash and moviNAND.
Moreover, on the same chip, are placing a GPS receiver and a controller capable of handling up to three displays simultaneously so as to leave producers free to give their devices more of a display. One a high level characterized solution of integration and rich perspective that offered by Samsung and will be distributed almost in parallel with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz processor. For its part, the latter will be able to play the video in Full HD 1080p and HDMI support with memories like DDR2 and DDR3.
