Want the muscle of 17inch gaming machine in somewhat smaller package then check out the new 15inch G53Jw-3DE which has components of G73Jh such as Core i7 processor, Blu-ray, Nvidia GTX 460 graphics, USB 3.0 port etc. This model may be tinier but yet looks like stealth warrior and has the strength to soar through the new titles. Moreover, there’s embedded Nvidia’s 3D display technology hence the gamers can now add up a third dimension to their attacking.
Design
The crafting is just same as G73 model but comes in comparatively less massive package. The body measuring 15.6inch wide, 11.9inch deep and 0.8-2.1inch tall and weighing 7.9 pounds can’t be carried all around but from the table to your couch wouldn’t be a problem.
It lacks flamboyance but its smooth and sharp design, gunmetal gray outer surface make it one of the best looking systems. The dual exhausts at the rear jumble with the slightly silver ASUS logo and Republic of Gaming symbol. Once you open the closure, the same subtle theme can be seen. The deck contains simple black keyboard, gray touchpad and few small buttons at the top. The upper left corner of the deck has ExpressGate instant boot button which loads ASUS’s ExpressGate Cloud instant-on OS in just 19secs, this you can use if you are unwilling to wait to boot into Windows 7. You don’t find any bright red buttons or color status lights.
The lid as well as deck uses rubberized material which helps in providing grip. It is very comfortable to touch, refuses fingerprints, durable and stays cool.
Configuration
The laptop is equipped with Intel Core i7-740QM processor running at 1.73GHz and Nvidia GTX 460M Graphics card with 1.5GB dedicated memory. To nosh up the CPU it ropes in 6GB of RAM that can be extended up to 8GB and 7,200rpm 750GB SATA hard drive. It also has 8X BD-ROM/DVDRW DL optical drive.

Display
The 15.6inch LCD display supports 1366X768 pixel resolution. Though the resolution is fine for mainstream users, it should have included few extra pixels at least for the sake of Blu-ray player and 3D gaming. However, the shiny screen bestows clear, colorful and sharp images. The screen is bright enough and supports wide range of viewing angles.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The backlit keyboard sports chiclet style keys which are quite comfy to type on. The flat square shaped keys are spaced out properly but the gap seems smaller when compared to other devices.
Unluckily, the essential keys for gameplay such as arrow keys and numerical keypad are tinier than the rest of the keys, hence makes it tough to employ them as controls. There are no dedicated media controls on thekeyboard.
The 4.4X2.2inch touchpad incorporated is large, responsive and smooth enough. It supports multitouch gestures and has a scroll strip. The left and right mouse buttons offer the proper quantity of tactile feedback but they are bit stiff to press.
Ports and Connectivity
The laptop owes good number of ports in its frame. The right spine houses Ethernet, VGA out, HDMI out and 2 USB ports where one is USB 3.0. The left spine houses Blu-ray drive and another 2 USB ports. The front lip towards left houses 8-in-1 card slot. There are 2 Kensington lock slots at the back.
It supports Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Wi-Fi connection.
Audio and Webcam
The audio from the speakers is loud enough to occupy a room and good enough to watch movies and play games. The higher tones and sound separations are precise but audio lacks bass. You can modify the audio settings using THX app but you can notice only a little effect.
The 2MP webcam is able to deliver colorful and sharp images even when shot in low light. During video chatting on Skype, images look sharp, smooth and noise-free.
3D experience
The system uses Nvidia’s active shutter technology to create and display 3D content. The transmitter inside the laptop converses with included glasses, whose lenses flash on/off to generate 3D effect. These glasses weigh 1.8ounces, very comfy to wear and must be charged through miniUSB. They have green light to indicate working condition. However, they make the things look bit darker.
Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology presently supports around 450 games which also include famous titles. The included Roxie Cineplayer software works its best to alter 2D DVDs to 3D and you can also change the 3D-ness of the movies on the go.
Performance
The system stays extremely cool even after using for long hours. The ASUS offers performance that is sufficient for video editing, hardcore gaming and simple productivity apps. It boots the OS in 75secs which is slower comparatively. The integrated hard drive transfers at the rate of 23.8Mbps. However, when it’s about transcoding video the system took just 58secs to convert 114MB MP4 file to AVI format.
The GTX 460 discrete graphics chip has quite strong capabilities. The system is something extra than a good gaming rig. It notches good fps in famous games like Far Cry 2 and World of Warcraft with the screen set to native resolution. Even in maxed resolution it provides good frame rate.
The battery can endure up to just 1hour 59mins which is obvious from a gaming system. You just can’t stay from an outlet for long. The 802.11n Atheros AR9285 wireless card offers strong transfer rates.
The company offers 2 years of warranty and 24/7 toll-free number support.
Software
Plenty of utilities are bundled with the laptop. ASUS Splendid for shifting between various video modes, SmartLogon Manager for setting up facial recognition logins, Security Manager to lock files, LifeFrame to capture photos, videos with webcam, Fast Boot speeds up start times, Control Deck supplies a neat 3D interface fro switching between these and Power4Gear works as power manager.
Conclusion
The G53J is a great 3D gaming system. At $1,769, you get Core i7 processor, 3D display, Nvidia graphics and Blu-ray player. Though in the same range you get HP Envy 17 3D, its ATI’s technology is not as good as Nvidia’s 3D Vision, moreover Nvidia supports more games and doesn’t need special software to begin playing. This notebook is surely a solid choice. [http://blog.itechtalk.com]
